The Škoda Karoq is designed and built by the Czech car manufacturer Škoda Auto. Introduced in 2017, the vehicle is based on the VW Group MQB platform, replacing the Škoda Yeti. The car slots between the smaller Škoda Kamiq and the larger 7-seater Škoda Kodiaq.
The Karoq comes in a range of petrol and diesel engines, and you can choose between front and four-wheel drive. There is also the option of a manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The Škoda Karoq’s entry-level 1.0 TSI 110 petrol engine is great around town. There is the more powerful 1.5 TSI 150 petrol for heavier loads and open roads due to 148bhp, with 0-60mph taking around 8.5 seconds. There are two 2.0-litre diesels, 114bhp (2.0 TDI 116) and 148bhp (2.0 TDI 150). At the top of the range is the 2.0 TSI 190 petrol, which gets four-wheel drive as standard and is available only in Sportline trim, 0-62mph taking just 7.0.
Performance and drive
Škoda has clearly worked hard to give the Karoq its own character – it falls right in the middle between comfort and sportiness. The Karoq is smooth on long motorway journeys, and great around town too – a great combination. The manual gearbox is light and easy to use, as is the clutch.
Interior
All versions have a modern-looking dashboard, front seat height and lumbar adjustment, plus good steering wheel movement, and sensibly grouped buttons and switches on the dashboard. Because of the raised driving position, pulling out, changing lanes and parking is made easy.
The Škoda Karoq’s entry-level SE trim comes with an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system as standard, and you get Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring. Other trims come with a built-in sat-nav, while the top trim has a larger system that can be controlled by hand gestures.
The headroom is excellent, so is legroom. There are lots of storage spaces dotted around, including big door bins and cubbies around the central dashboard area. The boot is one of the biggest, and all versions come with a range of hooks, trays and other clever features to stop shopping rolling around.
The VarioFlex seats fitted as standard to SE L trim and Edition (and optional on all other versions apart from Sportline) do many clever things; the seatbacks are split fairly evenly into three separate sections rather than the usual 60/40, which offers much more flexibility if you want to carry long loads as well as rear passengers. The seats also recline and slide back and forth independently of one another, so you can even remove all three to free up more space.
