The most versatile Mercedes compact SUV ever
The GLB
What car is the Mercedes GLB? As its name suggests, the GLB slots in between the GLA and GLC in the German company’s burgeoning range of SUVs. The GLB is Mercedes’ biggest ‘compact’ car yet, and thanks to the ever-increasing popularity of SUVs and crossovers, no doubt destined to become one of its best-selling.
The Mercedes GLB offers something a little different though. It’s similar in size to the GLC, but unlike its more expensive sibling, the GLB can be equipped with seven seats. This means it’s likely to appeal to family buyers in search of a little extra versatility.
It’s shorter than a VW Tiguan Allspace or Nissan X-Trail, but longer than a Land Rover Discovery Sport. Not as tall as any of those cars, but about as wide as the VW and Nissan, and a fair bit narrower than the Land Rover. The GLB has a similar engine to the BMW X3, though it produces 221 hp.
The GLB is marginally shorter and narrower than the more expensive GLC, but it’s actually taller, which, when combined with the boxy styling, creates a family-friendly interior that’s spacious enough for five adults. You also have the option of seven seats, which is another reason why families might shun the GLC in favour of the GLB.
It might be one of the most affordable Mercedes-Benz SUVs you can buy, but the GLB is also one of the most convincing. It prioritises practicality above all else, which means it can hold its own against rivals. The GLB is such a good car, it won the Best Family SUV in the 2021 Carwow Car of the Year Awards.
Powerful design, inside and out
The GLB makes a striking statement on the road. From its unique headlight design to its distinctive silhouette, the GLB leaves a lasting impression. Even the entry-level AMG Line features 19-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels, AMG styling, an electric tailgate, LED headlights, privacy glass, reversing camera, heated seats, keyless start, automatic climate control and a pair of seven-inch displays.
The interior is arguably its strongest selling point, generously appointed and strikingly elegant. It feels reassuringly upmarket inside, thanks to a good selection of premium materials and plush finishes. Eye-catching features include a digital widescreen cockpit, ambient lighting and distinctive SUV design elements.
With a ‘Hey Mercedes’, you can access the car’s features, making it easy to choose a playlist or select a destination to navigate to. Over time, MBUX will even offer suggestions based on your habits.
Engines and driving
GLB Model lines available are AMG Line, AMG Line Premium, AMG Line Premium plus a Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4Matic. How much does the Mercedes GLB cost? From £37,000 to £42,000.
It comes with the option of four engines – two types of diesel and two patrols. Most of the engines deliver low running costs, especially if you opt for the 2.0-litre diesel in the G 200 d. There’s also a more powerful G 220 d, an efficient 1.3-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit in the G 200, plus a 306bhp 2.0-litre petrol in the AMG 35.
All versions come with an automatic transmission, and there’s a choice of two or four-wheel drive depending on which engine you go for. Ride comfort is excellent, even on the stand-ard-fit AMG Line alloy wheels. The economy is good, with the diesel engine capable of returning up to 50mpg.
Driving the GLB smoothly is easy thanks to progressive, consistently weighted steering and pedals, which encourage a relaxed driving style and ought to keep your passengers happy. Tyre-roar is minimal, even with big wheels fitted, but there is a bit of buffeting from around the sizable door mirrors.
