Ford Mondeo
A more sophisticated way to drive
Ford is still making the Mondeo, and it is available as either a hatchback or an estate, and both have an abundance of space for both passengers and luggage, making them very practical for families.
The Mondeo is packed with advanced technologies designed to make your life easier. Systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go and Lane-Keeping System, continuously monitor and respond to changes in road conditions, traffic and your own driving. Other useful features, including Hill Start Assist and Active Park Assist help, deliver a stress-free, more refined driving experience.
The Ford Mondeo is a large family car manufactured by Ford since 1993. Ford has produced five versions of the Ford Mondeo across four generations. The most recent Mk5 has been in production since 2014 and will run to 2022.
The Mondeo replaced the ageing Ford Sierra. It shared very few parts with the Sierra and one of the most radical changes was the switch from rear-wheel-drive to front-wheel-drive. So, is Ford Mondeo rear-wheel drive? No, it has been front-wheel drive all the way.
The Mondeo has four trim levels: Zetec Edition, Titanium Edition, ST-Line Edition and Vignale. It is the largest it has ever been, a more refined and high-tech offering than it was before. Whether you choose a basic Mondeo, an upmarket Vignale or the Mondeo Hybrid, you’re getting a spacious family car with plenty of kit and handsome looks. How much does a Ford Mondeo cost? Prices start from £25,310. How big is a Mondeo? 4,867-4,871 mm L x 1,852 mm W x 1,482-1,501 mm H.
The newer Ford Mondeo is available in two diesel engines and a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid electric option, with the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel making up a bulk of Mondeo sales. It comes in 150PS and 190PS forms with 148bhp and 187bhp outputs. The 148bhp model is manual and the 187bhp version is found with the auto gearbox. And the newest Ecoboost petrol is this 237bhp version of the aluminium-block 2.0, found in the Titanium X Sport version of the newly facelifted Mondeo and replacing the thirsty five-cylinder. There are no only petrol engines in the newer range.
Performance and drive
The entry-level conventional springs and dampers do a good job regardless of the road surface. ST-Line models are equipped with sports suspension and chunky 19in wheels. The six-speed manual gearbox has a light and precise shift action and makes it easy to drive smoothly.
The Mondeo handles really well for a big car, it feels agile, turning into corners eagerly and staying upright and planted through twists and tight turns. It also feels very stable at high speeds.
Interior
The Mondeo’s seats are comfortable over long distances and reasonably supportive. The sport seats of the ST-Line models hold you in place more thanks to their more pronounced bolstering. All trim levels have front and rear parking sensors as standard to provide assistance while manoeuvring, while a rear-view camera is an additional option.
Nearly all Mondeo’s feature air conditioning, alloy wheels, Bluetooth and a USB port, with the most popular trim, some offer a DAB radio and a heated windscreen. Even entry-level Zetec Edition trim gives you an 8.0in colour touchscreen. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring are included with all Mondeo’s, allowing you to operate certain phone apps through the car’s touchscreen, plus you get a wireless charging pad for compatible phones.
The Mondeo is hugely spacious in the front, with deep wide door pockets on either side and a sizeable glovebox. You can fit three in the back reasonably easily, and you also get a ski hatch – a small door in the middle of the rear bench that you can feed long items (such as skis) through while keeping the two seats free.
