Choose the right S-Max for you
The first generation Ford S Max went on sale in 2006, marketed as being as sporty as a saloon, and spacious as an MPV. It received many positive reviews and was awarded the converted European Car of the Year 2007 on 13 November 2006.
The second generation has been produced since 2015, with a wide range of engines available and the option of a full-size spare wheel. 2020 saw Ford slash the engine choices, leaving the 148bhp or 187bhp 2.0-litre diesel engines. The smaller engine comes in either a manual or automatic gearbox, while the most powerful version is auto-only but comes with the option of four-wheel drive.
The range-topping Vignale joined the line-up in 2016, being built in Valencia, Spain. In 2018 the range update saw extra safety introduced, the Duratorq diesel replaced by 2.0 EcoBlue units in 119bhp, 148bhp and 187bhp forms, and an eight-speed automatic transmission introduced. An exterior design refresh was introduced in November 2019, along with the option of 18-way adjustable front seats and improved connectivity.
When the Ford S-MAX first went on sale, it proved it was the finest-handling MPV on the market. Thankfully, behind the stylish bodywork of the latest model, that’s still the case. Ford has now launched a new hybrid-electric car version of the S-MAX, with prices starting from £36,535. Ford’s hybrid powertrain is fully fitted and comprises a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine, a compact electric motor and a 1.1kWh battery pack. The system has a combined output of 187bhp and 200Nm of torque – and delivers claimed fuel economy of 43.5mpg and emissions as low as 147g/km of CO2.
Performance and drive
The Ford S-Max offers a comfortable ride and neat handling on the street, it also makes for a relaxing motorway cruiser, and it’s more entertaining than most rivals on twisty B-roads, too. The option of ‘self-levelling suspension’ is available for heavy loads or tow a trailer, on certain trim levels. Four-wheel drive models provide extra grip, but most drivers won’t notice this in everyday driving, so really just for the more rural driver.
Interior
The front two rows of the 7 seats have lots of head and legroom, and the third row is very handy as seating, plus the seats can be folded individually to create more load space.
Equipment is generous as all standard S Max get SYNC 3 infotainment system, 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless go, and parking sensors to protect that paintwork, while the set of three Isofix car seat mounts across the rear bench will be a boon for large families with young children.
Inside, buyers get fabric upholstery, dual-zone climate control and rear table trays. Like the standard MPV, there’s also a roaming 3G hotspot, a 10.1-inch digital gauge cluster and an eight-inch infotainment system.
The Ford S Max Vignale comes with 19-inch wheels, a rear camera, powered tailgate, heated steering wheel, cashmere interior trim plus an upgraded Sony multimedia system.
